Preserving Motherhood Through Breastmilk

Hello my name is Arletta. I live in a small town on the east coast of Maine. My fiancé and I have two children, Alexa and Cash. Our kids are 14 years apart. I was 22 when I had my daughter and I strictly bottle fed her with formula. I didn’t really know much about breastfeeding. When my midwife asked me if I wanted to breast or bottle feed, I told her bottle feed. That was that and she never mentioned anything else about it. So I didn’t know all the benefits from it. She told me that when my milk came in I may get the urge to try it, but I had to make sure I didn’t. A few days after giving birth, the thought started to cross my mind. I should try it. But then I remember my midwife telling me not to. Hmmm maybe it’s not good for the baby to have formula and breastmilk. Maybe it’s not good for me to try it, because what would happen if I didn’t like it. Was it something I wouldn’t be able to stop producing if I just tried it once. Would I have to go to the doctors and get something to stop producing breastmilk? Honestly I was kind of scared to even try it. I think being so young, knowing nothing about it, and what my midwife said.. Kind of scared me.  Plus what would I do when we were out and about or in a store and the baby was hungry? It would be way too embarrassing for me to breastfeed in public! I am very grateful that my daughter is healthy and she never had any issues with formula.  Fast forward 14 years. We found out we were having a son (YES he was planned). We wanted everything to be all natural for him. With Covid restrictions in hospitals, we wanted to avoid that as much as possible. Everything ended up falling into place. We had the most AMAZING midwife guiding us along our pregnancy. We were able to have our little boy in the comfort of our own home, surrounded by our family, and no one had to wear a mask. When it came time to feed him, I wanted to strictly breastfeed. The moment when you’re holding your new born to your breast, feeding him/her. It’s a feeling I cannot describe. I could literarily feel everything he needed being pulled out of me. Everything he would need to grow and thrive and be a healthy baby. Breastfeeding can be a struggle in many different ways. I am very thankful that my body produced everything he needed. Some women are over producers, some produce just enough and some can not produce any at all. There is nothing wrong with bottle feeding or breastfeeding. I have done both, and I am very lucky to have two very healthy beautiful children.

Along my breastfeeding journey I was hearing about people having their breastmilk turned into jewelry. At first I thought that was kind of weird. But then I realized, when your breastfeeding journey comes to an end it tears at your heart a little. What can you do to help preserve the memory of all of those late night feedings, or all the special moments when you are just comfort nursing and all the moments in between. Maybe it is a good idea to have some of my milk turned into jewelry. I mean I don’t really wear jewelry a lot. But it would be a nice to have, to wear for special moments or even just have as a keepsake. I started looking into having my milk turned into jewelry. It was kind of expensive. Was it something I could really afford to have made, just to sit in a jewelry box. Being someone that loves to do crafts and make lots of different things. I was going to try to make my own. I made two rings for myself. I was proud of what I had done and posted them on Facebook to show my friends and family what I did. Within minutes I had people messaging me asking if I could make them something. That’s when Mama’s Milk and Memories was born. An affordable way to preserve your breastmilk and have it turned into a personalized piece of jewelry just for you. Preserving Motherhood though jewelry.
